I just keep coming back

I am finding that I am coming back and looking at some of the tools for a second or third time. Keep wondering, "now if I do this, can I..."

Final web 2.0 post

Over all I found the web 2.0 challenge to be fun. Most of it I have been doing or was aware of before the "challenge". What I found most useful with the "challenge" was setting time aside to play with the different tools. I was aware of them but many of them I had not used. It was a good thing to take the time to use them. Thank you!

Wiki's

I find wikis to be a nitch tool. When we (you) need to work with a group I see that they can be useful. Noramlly, I don't see much use for them. In very large ceases I can see that they can can be very useful. For example, Wikipedia.

So where am I?

I have been gone for so long that I have earned the "flat hinney" award. Now what I have figure out is where I am on this 2.0 challenge.

Delicious

This seems a lot like what we were talking about in one of my theory classes 20 years ago. I still think it can be a good research tool if a person is sharing with a select group of people working in a narrow field. I can see with the way delicious allows a person to mark other people's bookmarks how a person could use this without knowing the people involved and still be able to be selective.

For my normal day to day tracking of bookmarks I prefer to keep them in my Google bookmarks on the Google toolbar. This allows me to have access to them from any machine (even if the Google toolbar is not installed) that I use while at the same time keeping them private. Several of my bookmarks are to secure sites where part of the security is the fact that the URL of the site is not published.

Social Networking

I have been on FB for over a year and have been enjoying it. I have found that you can set access to photos that you post so just whom you want to see them are allowed. I have setup several lists of friends with different levels of access.

I have had the most fun connecting with relatives! I met one cousin in the Twin Cities last Christmas and he connected me with another, who connected me with.... Now I have pictures of my great grandparents and have learned where they settled when they came to America.

I did create a FB page for the library a couple of months ago, see the link to the side. I found that one of the hard issues is to get FB to create a network for the city so everyone doesn't appeat to live in SF!

Google Docs

I have been using google docs for about two years. I use it to store things that I am working on, such as board policies, so I can get to them from home without the issue of multiple versions. It also works well for collaborating or just sharing documents.

Now if I could just convince the people I work with to suggest it to the person who comes in and want to save their resume but don't have a usb drive...

Scene Two, Take two

I cut take one. :)

Check this out.

Scene Two

Since I like music I went looking for things by some artists who's work I like. One thing I found was that not all things are truly video. I still like this one, it is a good one.

Podcasts, Scene One, Take One

Not hard to add the link to the podcast site once I remembered seeing the gadget when I first setup the blog. I haven't decided which of the directories I like best just using them for free and not creating an account. As it stands now I like that Mediafly will let me limit by format so I can look at just vodcasts. I will look at them some more later. Now I need to go to Best Buy to pickup a terabyte external drive. :)

Map Maker

Map Maker is fun but limited. For example in order to create a map showing where I have been in North America I would need to do a world map. So instead I made this map of where I have lived. L0oks like I have been living in the Midwest....

Currently I use facebook for sharing pictures because I can share with selected groups of people. The picture above is the one I have on flickr to us as an avatar.

Transfered the blog

Well I got the blog transfered, but.... Since it is a new account I am no longer following any of the other blogs and I do not have an avatar. So now to redo that...

Moving the blog to another account

I do this to myself every once in a while. Set something up one way and then after putting in enough effort that I don't want to start all over decide that I should have started differently. I did it again with this blog and the 2.0 challenge. I used my "throw away" (junk email) account to set up the blog. Now I am finding that it is a pain to keep switching between it and my normal Google account when I want to do something. So..... I am going to see if I can switch control of this blog to my regular account. If I lose it then I will just have to start over...

Distracted Again!

This time to Flickr. I had been fussing with why I could not get my avatar to show when I "follow" peoples blogs. I have it in my google profile and in the blogger one. Got to thinking that maybe I needed to have it posted on the web in place of uploading each time form my pc which lead me to Flickr. I now have and account on flickr and have it so I can post from it to the blog.

RSS Problem

The big problem I am having with searching for rss feeds is that I keep getting distracted. I search for something and then when I am looking through the results I see something else that I am interested in.

RSS

I have been using RSS feeds for sometime but I am still learning things. I have been using it on the library's website to let people subscribe to the "News" that is posted. If anyone wants to take a look they can go to http://watweb.sdln.net/news/ and click on the link. Another type of feed that is being used is hCalendar to allow people to import our calendar items into their electronic calendar. People can look at this at http://watweb.sdln.net/calendar.html

Twitter post

Interesting, the hash apparently only does the word it is in front of. So the hash I created was"#South" not "#South Dakota Library 2.0 Challenge" I wonder if I put the # in front of each word?...

On Twitter

Well I created a Twitter account and posted a twit. I used the hash: #South Dakota Library 2.0 Challenge. So if others use it we can tweet together. Tweet tweet. :)

Creating the blog

Very easy to do. The hardest part was reading the Turing test.

Seven and a half

The weakest habit of the 7 1/2 for me is setting the goal. Deciding what to do is hard for me. The strongest is the play part. Love to play with things!
